a short curtain that is hung from a horizontal pole at about head height in the doorways of restaurants, bars, and other shops when the shop is open for business. A typical のれん・暖簾 is made from dyed cloth and has the name of the shop or other lettering on it. The curtain is usually divided into several segments, and people push the segments aside as they pass in and out. The term can also refer to similar curtains used as room dividers or for other purposes.
In extended senses, のれん・暖簾 also refers to a business's brand name or reputation.
